DARPA Develops AI System to Identify Weapons and Spy Satellites

The agency recently demonstrated the identification abilities of the software system Agatha.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has partnered with Slingshot Aerospace to develop a program to identify and categorize objects orbiting in space. This week, Slingshot showcased the capabilities of the program, dubbed Agatha, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to identify whether space objects are debris, commercial entities, or “nefarious” outliers.

“As space activity shifts from satellites owned by a small number of operators to massive constellations operated by an array of owners, the need for transparency increases,” said Dylan Kesler, the director of data science and AI at Slingshot Aerospace. “The ability to quickly identify anomalies — whether a malfunctioning spacecraft or an intentionally nefarious ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’ — is an increasingly important aspect of maintaining safety and security in space and on Earth.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Director Stefanie Tompkins to be led by God as she oversees DARPA.
  • That DARPA officials will be discerning as they work with Slingshot Aerospace researchers and developers.
